Simple instructions for replacing or changing your car’s seat belt.
Seatbelts have been proven to save lives and therefore it is extremely important to keep yours in good working order. Seatbelts are often a neglected and unappreciated piece of our cars until we need one. Frankly, when you are used to wearing one, you almost feel naked without it. If it becomes necessary for you to change your auto seatbelt, don’t worry it can be a very simple endeavor.

The most difficult seatbelt part to change is the driver seatbelt or front passenger seatbelt, but even that can be done in a less than an hour. First you will need a flat-head screwdriver, set of sockets and a socket wrench and possibly some WD-40. Using the flat-head screwdriver, remove the panel covering the seatbelt mechanism. First you pry off one side near the edge of the door jam, and then the other side should just come off. This piece is located between the front and back door on the inside of the car. The seatbelt usually disappears into this piece of panel near your shoulder area. When this panel is removed, you should be able to see clearly the entire seatbelt mechanism. However, there might also be a small piece of plastic material covering the top of the seatbelt mechanism where it hangs from the above that panel and another small piece covering the bottom of the mechanism where it is attached to the floor. You would also need to open these areas with the flat-head screwdriver as well to expose the hexagon-shaped screws.
Next, you will use your socket wrench fitting the socket over the head of the hexagon-shaped screws that are visible. Be sure they fit snug so that you do not strip the heads of these screws. (Note: If the screws do not come free easily, do not force them as you may strip the screws. Try using some WD-40 to loosen their hold as they have usually been in place for a long time.) You should have one screw in the top mechanism and two on the bottom mechanism to remove. After releasing these three screws, your mechanism should be completely free from the automobile.
To install the new mechanism, you simply reverse the procedure. First you want to make sure that you have the mechanism and seatbelt all facing in the right direction for proper operation following installation. Then you would screw in the hexagon-shaped screws into the bottom mechanism, then reattach to the top at the shoulder. When all screws are secure, recover the mechanisms with their plastic coverings. To replace the side panel, simply pull it over one side of the door edge, and then pop onto the other side around the edge.
As stated earlier, this is the most complicated part of the seatbelt to remove and replace. The other pieces are usually one piece and only attached at one point of the automobile, usually behind or underneath the seat. These pieces usually require removal of two screws using the socket wrench and correct socket and then reinstalling using the same screws.
On the front seatbelt female part, there is also a wire that indicates breaking pressure in order to hold the seatbelt. This is just a plug-in mechanism and should be unplugged before removing seatbelt and the new seatbelt mechanism should be plugged in to ensure proper working condition of seatbelt.
Seatbelts save lives so be sure yours is kept in good working condition.
